Priests
In understanding the function of priests we need to realise that there was no exact equivalent of priest as we would understand. Priests did not preach or care for a group of people and they were not ‘messengers of god’. The term ‘priest’ is a modern translation for a variety of religious offices connected with the temple and funerary rites.
The Egypt Centre has a number of items relating to the women priests who provided music in the temple.
We also have:
a shabti belonging to a divine adoratrice
W867 a papyrus of the Book of the Dead showing a lector priests and other priests performing the Opening of the Mouth ritual.
Shabtis belong to priests with the title ‘God’s Father’
